Welcoming a New Cannabinoid to the Hemp Market: THCH

Posted by David Nadel on Apr 12, 2024

As we all know, there are loads of cannabinoids to choose from these days, most of which promise a super satisfying high. And, it can be hard to keep up with all of them, which is why we want to help. So, you can see why then, we really need to focus solely on one of the more popular of this new “crop” of hemp derivatives: THCH – a cannabinoid beloved for its reliable, consistent, and potent effects that are something to truly behold.

What Exactly is THCH?

THCH is short for tetrahydrocannabihexol, which’s a naturally occurring but extremely trace cannabinoid found naturally in cannabis – both hemp and marijuana. THCH was only discovered recently – within the past few years, to be more precise – and so as you can imagine, there’s still a lot to learn about it.

THCH is classified as a hexyl homologue of delta 9 THC, and they share an identical molecular formula. This means that rearranging delta 9 THC can convert it into THCH. THCH is also regarded as the second most potent cannabinoid in all of cannabis, after THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol). How come? Well, because the chemical structure of THCH enables better attachment to cannabinoid receptors that elicit various responses that lead to the cannabinoid’s effects.

Will I Get High from Taking THC-H?

Yes! THCH is an intoxicating cannabinoid, and it’s the second most intoxicating cannabinoid after THCP. While THC-P is estimated to be 10x as psychoactive as delta 9 THC, we don’t have an exact idea of how much stronger THCH is than delta 9. What we can say is that taking pure tetrahydrocannabihexol distillate will produce a very powerful psychoactive effect.

So, what does the ‘high’ feel like? Naturally, there are always certain variables to consider, like dosage, personal tolerance, product type, and strain (if applicable). But, overall, people say that THCH feels quite relaxing, while also being extremely euphoric, and that it can ease the body as well. This aligns with how we describe the highs of most forms of THCH, so no surprises there.

Does THCH Have Any Benefits?

First off, we have to point out that tetrahydrocannabihexol has yet to undergo any medical studies on its potential benefits. The hemp derivative is brand new to the market, and it takes time to research a new cannabis compound, let alone get the funding for the research and publish the study. Because of this, we can’t make any health-related claims regarding the effects of THCH, but it’s also fair to compare it to delta 9 THC, because again, THCH is just a metabolite of delta 9.

But, THCH is quite similar to delta 9 THC in terms of its chemical structure and, delta 9 THC has been studied thoroughly over many decades for its positive effects, which means that we can make some guesses as to what it may be able to offer.

  • THCH Might Help with Physical Discomfort: THCH likely offers the same analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects seen with delta 9 THC, offering notable relief from physical discomfort, and being useful as a natural means for finding relief on a daily basis.
  • THCH May Be Neuroprotective: One of the most fascinating areas of research in cannabis is the neuroprotective properties that can be derived from a number of cannabinoids, including delta 9 THC, showing usefulness against neurological and neurodegenerative conditions including epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson’s, etc.
  • THCH May Be Antiemetic: Many cannabinoids have antiemetic properties (in other words, the ability to reduce nausea), and we know that delta 9 THC is useful as an antiemetic agent.
  • THCH May Help with Mood: Cannabinoids interact with neurotransmitters that control our mood, and THCH likely shares these qualities, offering anxiolytic and mood-boosting properties that can help us feel our best, mentally.
  • THCH May Improve Appetite: One of the most widely observed properties of delta 9 is its ability to boost appetite, and this is likely the case with THCH as well.

What Kinds of THC-H Products Can I Buy?

You will find various THCH products on the market these days, as it’s definitely become one of the more popular THC compounds. People adore THCH due to how potent it is, and because its effects seem to be very consistent, providing a reliably satisfying experience time and time again. For now, the most likely THCH product types/delivery methods that can be found are:

  • Vapes: THCH vapes, including vape cartridges used with rechargeable vape pens, and all-in-one disposable vape pens, contain a blend of THCH distillate (extract) and terpenes, in a number of strain options to choose from.
  • Gummies: THCH gummies are delicious edibles that come in many flavors and milligram strengths.
  • Tinctures: THCH tinctures are bottled oils that come in dropper bottles, in a variety of strengths and some flavor options as well. They’re absorbed under the tongue, offering about 4-6 hours of a ‘high’.
  • Dabs: Dabs (aka concentrates) containing THCH offer a very, very powerful high due to how concentrated they are, and are meant to be “dabbed”, which’s to vaporize the product at a high temperature using a special device intended for dabbing.

Is THCH a Legal Cannabinoid?

THCH is protected under federal law as all hemp derivatives are legal as long as they contain a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight, as determined by the United States Farm Bill that passed in 2018. While tetrahydrocannabihexol hasn’t been explicitly banned in any state, a number of them have outlawed the sales of psychoactive hemp derivatives ever since delta 8 THC first hit the scene as the first legal intoxicating cannabinoid to enter the hemp market. The states in which you cannot legally buy THCH are:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Washington
