Welcoming a New Cannabinoid to the Hemp Market: THC-B

Posted by David Nadel on Oct 07, 2022

Tetrahydrocannabutol (THC-B) is just one of 113 cannabinoids and counting that we know of in the hemp plant. And, if you’ve never heard of it before, there’s a reason for that – it was only discovered in 2019 by a group of cannabis researchers, and since then, has been determined to be a highly intoxicating cannabinoid that can deliver all kinds of magnificent effects. With THC-B just entering the market, we’d like to offer a resource where you can learn everything you need to know about it, in terms of its effects, safety, and more.

What Exactly is THC-B?

Tetrahydrocannabutol is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that’s found in hemp. THC-B was only discovered in 2019, like we said before, by a group of Italian researchers who used advanced chromatography methods to take a deeper look into the chemical composition of cannabis. What they discovered was two previously unknown cannabinoids: THC-P (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) and THC-B.

As you might have guessed, THC-B is so new that there’s a lot we don’t know about it. You can imagine that it takes years to fully analyze a new cannabinoid, write a scientific report and have it published for the public to learn more. Cannabinoids like CBD and delta 8 THC were discovered decades ago, and that’s why we have such a wealth of information about them at our fingertips. THC-B is quickly becoming popular, however, so research on the cannabinoid’s effects should be available soon.

So, here’s what we do know. THC-B is a homologue of delta 9 THC and has a butyl side chain rather than a pentyl side chain that changes its chemical structure. In fact, this one change affects how the cannabinoid interacts with CB1 receptors – aka the cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system that cause a psychoactive response when we consume cannabinoids. It also plays a role in how the cannabinoid interacts with all cannabinoid receptors to yield distinctive effects throughout the body.

Basically, we are aware that THC-B works in a stronger manner with CB1 receptors than delta 9 THC, attaching to these receptors more efficiently, so to speak. As a result, THC-B has been determined to be more potent than delta 9, which’s something you will need to be aware of before you take it.

So, is THC-B Intoxicating?

Tetrahydrocannabutol is considered to be the second most intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis that we know of so far. For reference, THC-P is 10x as psychoactive as delta 9 THC. Exactly how high you’ll get off of THC-B is hard to determine – we don’t yet know the rate at which it attaches to CB1 receptors compared to THC-P or delta 9 THC. And of course, the user’s tolerance, the product’s strength and the strain of the product can all influence how high you get as well. Still, it’s safe to assume that THC-B is highly intoxicating, so you’ll want to consider that before you take it, based on your tolerance.

Does THC-B Do Anything Else?

We’re sort of at the tipoff the iceberg when it comes to what we know about THC-B. As more researchers take a close look at the cannabinoid, we’ll know a lot more. But, THC-B has already been tested in certain capacities to find out what properties it can offer on the therapeutic side of things – aka its effects other than getting us high. Cannabinoids all work with the body’s endocannabinoid system as a means to regulate processes, bringing us into homeostasis. So, all cannabinoids offer positive effects to the body through different mechanisms related to the endocannabinoid system, and here’s what we know about THC-B so far.

  • THC-B Might Help with Physical Discomfort: Early suggestions show that THC-B might help with physical discomfort, offering both analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. That’s not surprising as this is something we’ve found with many cannabinoids over the years, but given the potency of THC-B, these properties could be particularly effective.
  • THC-B May Play a Role in Sleep: THC-B may support sleep by offering a shorter sleep onset time and help the body reach deeper sleep stages for a more restorative night.

What Types of Products Contain THC-B?

Tetrahydrocannabutol is only now making its way onto the market, but already you can find a variety of product types out there like the ones below.

  • Vapes: THC-B vapes, including vape cartridges used with rechargeable vape pens, and all-in-one disposable vape pens, contain a blend of THC-B distillate (extract) and terpenes, in a number of strain options to choose from.
  • Gummies: THC-B gummies are delicious edibles that come in many flavors and milligram strengths. They are known to offer the longest-lasting effects out of any delivery method – up to 8 hours.
  • Tinctures: THC-B tinctures are bottled oils that come in dropper bottles, in a variety of strengths and some flavor options as well. They are absorbed under the tongue, offering about 4-6 hours of a THC-B high.
