How to Properly Dose with THC-P

Posted by David Nadel on Aug 31, 2023

Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THC-P) is one of the most sought-after cannabinoids to come from the hemp plant, and it’s no wonder why. THC-P’s intensely potent effects go far beyond what we’re used to from hemp derivatives. Given the fast-rising popularity of THC-P, an influx of people are finding themselves eager to give it a try for themselves. But, one of the most important things about taking THC-P is getting the dosage right. But thank your lucky stars though, THC-P has been out for long enough that we have a pretty good idea of what the proper dosage should be, for every product type, and every level of cannabis experience.

Understanding THC-P Dosage vs. Strength

First, let’s quickly explain the difference between dosage and strength. A lot of THC-P products come in milligram strengths – like gummies and tinctures – which identifies how many milligrams of tetrahydrocannabiphorol are in each serving. Dosage, on the other hand, is the amount of the product you take – like a single 25mg gummy, or one 33mg dropper of a tincture.

Dosing with THC-P Mixed with Live Resin

Did you know that more products combine THC-P with live resin? Live resin is a highly potent terpene extract made from fresh, flash-frozen, rather than dried hemp flower buds. You’re most likely to find live resin in vapes, but some gummies and dabs are also made with live resin. Does this change the dosing guidelines then? As it turns out, not really. Yes, live resin is very potent, but it is really the terpenes that’re more potent, so you won’t get that much ‘more high’.

Dosing with THC-P Mixed with Live Rosin

We know about live resin, but what about live rosin? Live rosin is an even more concentrated terpene extract than live resin. It’s a solventless concentrate made from fresh, flash-frozen hemp flower, so by nature, the effects are stronger. But again, this has more to do with the terpenes than the THC-P. Again, you don’t really need to adjust the dosage.

Dosing with THC-P vs. Dosing with Other Cannabinoids

The thing about dosing with THC-P is that you can’t really compare it to dosing with other cannabinoids. How come? Well, because tetrahydrocannabiphorol’s effects, including its high, are about 10x as strong as that of delta 9 THC. Let’s say you’ve been using delta 8 up until this moment – which is about 30% less intoxicating than delta 9. At this time, let’s say that you’ve been taking 25mg delta 8 gummies on a daily basis. Because THC-P is so much more intoxicating than delta 8, simply switching to a 25mg THC-P gummy would probably be way too much. So, we adjust the dosage amount for THC-P since a little really goes a long way.

THC-P Dosage Guidelines: How Much Should You Take and What is Considered to Be the Ideal Dosage?

A very good question, and as you will see, that depends on two variables – the THC-P product type and level of experience you have with THC-P in general. We’re pretty much aware that repeated use of cannabinoids allows the body to develop a tolerance, so that over time, we need a higher dose to get the desired effects. With that being said, here’s our guide to dosing with each THC-P product type/delivery method.

THC-P Vapes

When figuring out how much of a THC-P vape to take, the rules are the same whether you’re using a disposable vape or a 510-threaded vape cartridge. Now, with certain types of products, we dose according to the milligram strength. But that’s hard with vapes and other inhalable products, because we’re not counting out the number of milligrams when we inhale. Even if we were to determine how many milligrams of THC-P are in the vaping product, factors like how long we inhale for, and how deeply we pull in the vapor can throw that number off.

So, instead, we make things simpler by going by the number of puffs. With that being said, here’s the guide for dosing with THC-P vapes:

  • Beginners: 1 small puff
  • Intermediate Users: 1-2 regular puffs
  • Advanced Users: 2+ puffs

THC-P Flower

If you’re smoking or vaping flower, you’re going to be applying the same rules that you did to vaping, since you’re, again, inhaling THC-P. But, since smoking flower is a bit more potent than vaping it, we recommend taking slightly shallower puffs. The same goes for anyone using a bong, or a desktop vaporizer, which tends to produce massive clouds of vapor. If you’re smoking flower out of a pipe, or rolling it in papers, then go just slightly easier than you would if you were vaping the flower out of a portable vaporizer. Overall, the guide is as follows:

  • Beginners: 1 small puff
  • Intermediate Users: 1-2 regular puffs
  • Advanced Users: 2+ puffs

But, what if you’re making THC-P edibles, by incorporating THC-P-infused butter (or another type of fat) into a recipe? Then you’d turn to our next section, which outlines the dosing guideline for edibles.

THC-P Edibles

With THC-P edibles, we determine the proper dosage based on the milligram strength. That’s because edibles are infused with THC-P distillate – aka a pure THC-P extract – and so each serving of an edible contains the same amount (number of milligrams) of the cannabinoid. If you’re using gummies, it’s easier to portion each piece out. But, if you’re consuming a THC-P baked good, like a brownie or cookie, you might need to actually cut the baked good into individual portions yourself. Overall, dosing with edibles is as follows:

  • Beginners: 1-3mg
  • Intermediate Users: 3-5mg
  • Advanced Users: 5mg+

THC-P Tinctures

THC-P tinctures come in dropper bottles, consisting of THC-P distillate diluted in a carrier oil. The milligram strength and size of the bottle can vary, and dosing directions on the back of the label clearly tell you how many drops to take based on how many milligrams are in each drop. The dosing guide for a tincture is:

  • Beginners: 1-3mg
  • Intermediate Users: 3-5mg
  • Advanced Users: 5mg+

THC-P Concentrates

Finally, we have THC-P concentrates, also known as dabs. These ultra-concentrated products are highly potent, and so people need to really go easy with them. But, here’s the thing: dabs are an advanced product, so if you’re dabbing THC-P concentrates, the assumption is that you already have a high tolerance. Because of that, the dosing guideline is as follows:

  • Beginners: 1 small puff
  • Intermediate Users: 1-2 regular puffs
  • Advanced Users: 2+ puffs

Keep in mind that this applies to both smoking and vaporizing dabs, since both methods produce extremely powerful results, and so whether you’re smoking or vaping them doesn’t make that big of a difference.

What About Hemp-Based Products Containing More Than Just THC-P?

Now, one thing we want to mention is that you’ll find a number of THC-P products on the market that combine THC-P with other cannabinoids, ranging from milder ones like delta 8 THC, to similarly potent ones like THC-H. Of course, if you’re, say, vaping a disposable that’s 85% delta 8 and only 15% THC-P, you would be able to vape more, since the delta 8 is diluting that potency. Because there are countless combinations of cannabinoids out there, each with its own potency, it’s hard to give a one-size-fits-all guide to how much to take. Therefore, we recommend following the dosing directions on the product’s label for the best results.

What Happens if You Take Too Much?

One last thing we want to touch upon is what happens when you end up taking more than the recommended amount of THC-P. The good news is that like all naturally occurring compounds in hemp, THC-P is nontoxic to the human body – in other words, it’s not associated with fatal overdose effects. Instead, you may experience mild and short-lived side effects that include anxiety, drowsiness, and lightheadedness. If you do end up getting too high off of THC-P, simply wait it out, as the feeling will pass within a few hours at most.

Dosing Wisely with THC-P Means You Can Get the Most Out of This Cannabinoid.

Since tetrahydrocannabiphorol is remarkably potent, you want to be all the more aware of how much you take, based on your tolerance as well as the product type you’re taking. Good news is, THCP products that’re available at The Calm Leaf all feature clear dosing directions on their labels, so you’ll know exactly how much to take to get generally desirable effects. Check out our product selection, and just know that you’re taking the ideal dosage amount to experience the many enjoyable effects that THC-P has to offer.

Please Note: If you’re taking prescription (or some non-prescription) medications, or are totally new to THC-P, it’s recommended that speak with your doctor first about taking THC-P – especially if you plan on taking it on a regular basis.
